Role in Mystery Train
The Coal Car is first seen by the player when they first left on the island. There they find the Coal Car, with the rest of the train in tow, stopped at a train stop on Main Street. After they help Thomas Edison load his heavy luggage on the train, Edison gives the Poptropican a ticket to to the train and heads to the Coal Car and climbs aboard. Shortly after, you follow him to the Coal Car and also climb aboard. Then you will appear on the Coal Car, next to the John Bull Conductor as he yells "Full steam ahead!" Then the Poptropican will run left to the John Bull Coal Man, who welcomes the player aboard. After that, the Poptropican will leave the Coal Car.
The next time the Coal Car appears is when the Coal Man leaves the room for a snack, and shortly after, the thief sneaks in the Coal Car and pulls the emergency brake, screeching the train to an unscheduled stop. Meanwhile, the Player, who was investigating Mark Twain's Cabin, feels the train's halt and climbs off the train. After talking to the three different Poptropicans, the conductor calls everyone on board and after they climb in, the Player arrives on the Coal Car.
The Player leaves, and after getting a clue that the Coal Man may be involved in the mystery, returns to the Coal Car and confronts the Coal Man. After finishing, the Poptropican leaves to find proof that the Coal Man is innocent. Later, Nikola Tesla is framed as the thief and is brought and tied up in chains and a lock to the Coal Car. Luckily, the Poptropican climbs above the train and hops from car to car, landing in the Coal Car. There they talk to Tesla and afterwards leave the Coal Car.
After that, the Poptropican returns to the Coal Car a few times to again talk to Tesla, and on the last visit setting Tesla free using a bag of lock picks. Later the Player feels the John Bull halting to a stop again, this time arriving at the fair. Then the Poptropican raced to the Coal Car and climbed off the train. After the island is completed, the Coal Car is only seen stopped on Main Street again.
